Aeolidia to the rescue!
Lisa Congdon is an artist and illustrator who does lots of things: she sell prints and products in two shops (one online and one brick & mortar in Portland, Oregon); she teaches online classes; she writes and illustrates books (which she also sells in her shops); she has a wholesale business; she licenses her work; she does custom illustration work for companies and non-profit organizations; and she does a lot of public speaking, mostly on creativity and art business topics.
Lisa started her business in 2007, and it’s grown exponentially since then. She has a huge online following and she’s worked for clients around the world including Comme des Garçons, Crate and Barrel, Facebook, MoMA, REI, and Harvard University among many others. While her company and client roster continued to grow, her website left something to be desired. All of her online sales took place via her Etsy shop, and she had a separate, information-only website. Her goal for working with Aeolidia was to create an ecommerce website that is easy to navigate and totally mobile friendly. She told us,
“Honestly, I have a really thriving business. I can barely keep up with the demand I have for business! I want to sustain that going into the future. Mostly, my goal is simply to have a beautiful and nicely organized site that is really easy for all my stakeholders (clients, customers, folks interested in having me speak, etc) to navigate to find what they need. I want it to reflect the friendliness of my brand.”
We’d been fans of Lisa’s work for years, and we were excited to work with her on this project!
Aeolidia to the rescue!
For Lisa Congdon’s custom Shopify website, designer Do-Hee Kim incorporated Lisa’s own illustrations and core brand colors to ensure the new website had plenty of punch and personality. Do-Hee also balanced that with white space and warm tones, keeping it clean, fresh, modern and easy-to-browse with Lisa’s art and products as the star. During the design process, Do-Hee told Lisa,
“Overall, my goal is to create a fresh, fun, immersive shopping experience for the LC website to inspire and engage your customers. I’ve always been inspired by your fun and bold art and I wanted to make sure that the website serves to showcase your products while being a modern and welcoming space.”
Partnering with Shopify developer Shoshanna Love, Do-Hee also layered in subtle load-animations on the new site to create a more contemporary, visually rich experience.
What Our Client Had to Say
I avoided creating a new website for a long time, even though I knew I needed one. When I finally decided to go for it, it was undoubtedly one of the largest projects I’d taken on in a long time. Over the almost half a year that we worked together to design and code my new website, Aeolidia worked to make the process as organized and simple as possible. Everyone on their team was kind, and eager to help me create the best website possible for my needs. We communicated almost daily around every aspect of the design and functioning of the site. They made the complicated aspects feel manageable. I’m so happy with my new site, and working with Aeolidia was worth every penny and minute of my time.
Lisa came to Aeolidia and presented us with the challenge of creating a site that consolidated all the various aspects of her work and business in a single, easy-to-use site. We wanted to highlight Lisa’s, illustration portfolio, her latest book tour/press updates, and most importantly, create a streamlined online shop that could support her growing online business. Visually, we, of course, had no shortage of inspiration. We showed restraint in the site’s palette and typography simple to create a clean canvas to showcase Lisa’s bold and colorful work but brought in Lisa’s signature illustrations for pops of personality throughout the site. The result is a home for all things Lisa Congdon site that is contemporary, fun, and easy to browse — a new and improved site that we know will serve both the Lisa Congdon team and customers alike!

Lisa wasn’t using her website for sales before, but since re-launching for e-commerce, the site has been working wonders for her shoppable art prints, books, and gifts. Post-project, the new site saw an 11% decrease in bounce rate, meaning fewer people are leaving right away. Instead, visitors are loving what they see and choosing to take a look around—spending about 30% more time on the site than they used to.
All that extra time browsing is certainly leading to a healthy conversion rate, with 2.14% of desktop users and 2.37% of mobile users making a purchase. While in general, desktop users tend to convert at higher rates, some of Lisa’s best traffic comes from Instagram. Her followers are clicking through, landing on the new site, and finding what they’re looking for, thanks to a shopping experience as engaging and inviting as Lisa’s work itself.
The results have been clear and quick. Within the first month post-launch, Lisa Congdon’s new site made a solid five figures in revenue. By the six-month mark, its sales figures passed the 100K mark with flying colors!
From zero to six figures in six months? We call that a beautiful ROI.
