Showcasing original fine art in downtown New Canaan, Connecticut, Sorelle Gallery is known for its staff of fine art consultants that help pair clients with artwork that fits them and their spaces. They take pride in customizing their service from start to finish, allowing clients the flexibility to live with artwork for up to a week prior to making a purchasing decision. While many of the gallery’s clients are local, they also have an expansive client list of art-lovers from all over the country and the world. To recreate the in-person shopping experience online, our client Sandy was already offering services like digitally rendering artwork into a room so that customers could “preview” how it’d look. And to appeal to customers shopping at different price points, she also planned to expand the gallery’s offerings to include fine art prints.
But she quickly realized that they needed a more robust e-commerce infrastructure for their online sales. Customers who tried to purchase artwork online often had to call her many times for help navigating the site.
“We need a really solid digital infrastructure that provides the consumer with an excellent experience and minimizes admin time for staff. We want our website to generate sales, and increase consumer trust so that we get to a point where clients buy directly on the site without contacting us.”
Aeolidia to the rescue!
Designer Ann Parker created a new site design for Sorelle Gallery that felt polished, modern, and easy to navigate. It was important to keep the design elements clean and simple so that they could complement the different styles of artwork and photography that the gallery showcases. Copywriter Natalia Sylvester wrote new copy for the website’s home pages, about pages, and art advisory pages, with a focus on helping Sorelle Gallery’s personality and unique services come through in a clear, sophisticated manner. To keep the customer experience seamless and user-friendly, developers Jon Manning and Iran Mateu coded the site to more easily accommodate all the different ways a customer might shop for artwork, whether by size, color, style, and more.
Using Sorelle Gallery’s existing branding guidelines, Ann took inspiration from their current typography choices and colors, but also introduced subtle new details like cream colors and deep gold lines to infused it with a modern, elegant look that would translate well to online.
To make site design more visually interesting and dynamic, Ann chose to break out of the typical grid a bit. Subtle layering and overlapping elements provide a somewhat unexpected layout to showcase creative work.
Considering how many of Sorelle’s customers shop for their artwork on their phones or tablets, a responsive design was top of mind at all times.
