Heather's Problem
Heather’s online fabric store, Lark Cottons, had been using the same website for the majority of the time since she launched the company in 2010. Her old ecommerce platform was outdated, and it was hard to find support when she had issues with it. The old platform made it difficult for her to update her website or add products and categories.
Technical glitches with her old website created customer service problems, like not sending order or shipping confirmation emails to customers and causing errors during the checkout process. It was hard for customers to search Lark Cottons’ extensive catalog of fabrics and products, and the old website did not meet new EU regulations.
Heather was in need of a more robust ecommerce solution, so she turned to Aeolidia to create a custom Shopify website that would solve her problems. We created a modern ecommerce website for her growing fabric store that is much more user-friendly, for both Heather and her customers.

Our Solutions
For this project, designer Christine Castro Hughes first created a new logo and brand identity for Lark Cottons. For the custom Shopify website, her goal was to create a fresh, fun, and easy-to-use site that showcases the beautiful fabrics Lark Cottons sells and inspires their customers.
The homepage sets the tone for the whole website, so the rules she set up on this one page are repeated and carried through all the pages of the site. Christine took great care to plan all the little details to make sure that everything across the entire website flows easily and works well on responsive browsers like tablets and mobile phones.
The website concept, as well as the business cards, packaging, and extras that Christine designed, feature the graphics, colors, and typography that she created in the branding phase.
The colorful photography paired with graphic details and engaging home page copy written by Natalia Sylvester will keep customers scrolling and encourage clicks — and ultimately, purchases.
What Our Client Had to Say
Thanks for taking the time to work through these little details! I really appreciate all the effort. Because quilting is so much about design and detail I think it will make a difference in the long run to have all this fine-tuned, and really resonate with customers.

Branding Solutions
Lark Cottons embraces the joy and adventure in modern quilting. Designer Christine Castro Hughes created a new logo and brand identity in that same spirit.
Inspired by the triangle shapes found in bunting decorations, Christine came up with a new brandmark. The simple abstract kite signals adventure, as well as fabric piecing. The string gives a nod to thread, but also gives the overall logo balance.
The rough brush lines of “lark” have a handmade, playful quality, while the word “cottons” in simple type keeps the logo modern and grounded. The kite string loops around the “l” in “lark” in a playful way, drawing your eye to the word “cottons.” The loop continues on the other side of the word, creating a balanced mark.
Paired with modern typography, triangle graphics and pops of color, the new branding is fun and happy — a true celebration of modern quilting.

Website Solutions
Lark Cottons carries a huge selection of fabrics, so designer Christine Castro Hughes created a very robust navigation menu to make it easier for customers to browse. Visitors can shop by manufacturer, designer, color, theme, or type of fabric.
For the collections pages, we added additional options and functionality to cater to the needs of fabric buyers: visitors can easily select a yardage quantity to add to their cart, bookmark their favorites by clicking “Add To Design Wall”, or view more details.
As part of our custom Shopify development process, we added functionality specific to selling fabric: customers can order a “Fat Quarter” of fabric or choose an amount of fabric by the 1/4 yard. The multiplier logic we added to make it easy for customers to order fabric by the 1/4 yard is something not found on all online fabric stores, but it is something that creates a much better user experience for Lark Cottons’ customers.
