Bel Kai is a jewelry business that designs & creates one of a kind, custom pendants & charms – using original prints & papers. After being in business for eight years, Whitney came to us for a new identity and ecommerce website. She told us:
The main thing we would like for customers in a new site is more options for shopping. We are limited with the site we are currently using in that there is no way to filter through the products in our catalog. For instance, one specific flower design could be offered in a square, circle, oval, rectangle setting – in any number of metal finishes, even different colors. We are hoping for a bar to refine by on the left hand side of our site. Also, we would like to simulate a ‘jewelry bar’ experience for our online shoppers. We have our collection at a brick and mortar shop and customers love creating a necklace with several charms/pendants/birthstones, etc. Making it their own is what we specialize in!

Christine began by creating a new logo and identity for Bel Kai, keeping in mind Whitney’s desire for a simple and classic logo. A mark that has a touch of modern and maybe a nod to vintage—but nothing cutesy or frou frou.
Lauren then took the new identity and the adjectives that Whitney used to describe her design preferences (classic, clean, muted) and showed her a gorgeous new website design. She told her:
You’ll see a lot of clean white space, and a lot of real estate dedicated to big, beautiful photos highlighting your work. Your inspiration sites included both minimalist and more layered/textured styles. (I love both!) So I tried to strike a balance between those looks, adding some watercolor strokes in your branded colors for warmth and character, and a bit of papery texture, but generally keeping the layout very clean and straightforward.
I also prioritized ease of use, putting (what I see as) the most important links in the top navigation, with a collection of “quick links” in the footer. Account links + search are in the anticipated locations, so visitors can find what they need without even having to think.
We also worked to make the site more functional for Bel Kai by using an app to control customizable products so that Whitney can easily sell her custom items now, and add new items in the future!
