Aeolidia to the rescue!
Created by best-selling author and designer Susan B. Anderson, Barrett Wool Co. provides 100% American sourced, spun and dyed wool yarns to knitting lovers—as well as exclusive knitting patterns designed in-house by Susan. They’re so well-known for their custom yarns, unique colorways, and knitting kits that their biggest challenge is keeping products in stock. Kits feature Susan’s designs paired with the yarns needed to knit them, and although they’re handmade in large batches to keep up with demand, they often sell out quickly.
By coming to us for a site redesign, Barrett Wool Co. hoped to turn this nice-to-have problem into an opportunity. Evan Anderson, who runs the shop’s business operations, wanted to find a way to retain customers even when the items they were looking for were sold out. “We need a better way of featuring items that are still in stock while encouraging customers to sign up for notices on anything that is no longer available,” he said. “What I am most excited about for this project is improving the overall experience of our website. If we can improve in some of those unmeasurable ways, it would go a long way in building a more special experience for every user that visits our site.”
Aeolidia to the rescue!
Barrett Wool Co. had a great existing logo that they wanted to expand upon with new elements like icons and patterns to use in their packaging, shop, and social media efforts. From those elements, Ann created a new, mobile-friendly site design that quickly helps visitors find the types of products they’re looking for, while also inviting them to stay and take a look around if those products are no longer available. New copy, written by Natalia, helps visitors immediately know they’ve found a unique, one of a kind knitting shop, while employing enticing Calls to Action that direct them where to go next.

Inspired by the client’s own vibrant yarn inventory, designer Ann created a minimal new color palette with eye-grabbing pops of color. She focused on creating a brand design that would tell Barrett Wool Co.’s story: their products make people feel creative and crafty, while providing the materials and patterns they need to create truly special things. A series of fun, colorful icons and alternate brand marks convey a creative, modern sensitivity with a quirky feel.
Barrett Wool Co. already had a loyal following of avid knitters due to founder Susan’s successful books and patterns. While the website was functioning for them, the design and user experience felt a bit like an afterthought.
Ann saw opportunities to bring in more life and whimsy to the website design, with design elements such as the cute and whimsical stitch patterns used throughout, as well as an overlapping stacked design to draw attention to the brand’s different type of product offerings.
Bright, gorgeous photography fully showcases Barrett Wool Co’s beautiful selection of high-quality yarns and knitting projects. The result is a more modern and easily shoppable buying experience for their raving fans!

Co-founded in 2016 by author and lead designer Susan B. Anderson and her son, Evan Anderson, we are proud to be a family-run company committed to fostering community and creativity from our home base in Madison, WI. Our upgraded quality wool yarns are domestically-sourced and custom-spun in local mills. Our 100% wool yarn is custom-dyed in Philadelphia. We work closely with all the people at the source of our products to bring you thoughtfully-made, visually-stunning fibers. Then we pair each collection, in the exact amount needed, with original, fun and creative patterns designed by Susan B. Anderson.
The Story Behind Our Name
The B in Susan’s name? It’s for Barrett. As in Susan Barrett, the teenager who taught herself to knit one summer, fell in love with it, and never stopped.
Along the way, Susan went to college, started teaching middle school, got married and became Susan Barrett Anderson. Over the years, she and her husband had four children, and many more knitting projects ensued. When she retired from teaching in 1996, Susan began designing knitwear for children and babies. This led to her first knitting book, Itty Bitty Hats by Susan B. Anderson, published in 2004 by Artisan Books.
Today, Susan is an award-winning blogger, writer, designer, international knitting instructor, and the best-selling author of six books. Her work in the industry has spanned more than 30 years.
Barrett Wool Co. is the proud culmination of Susan’s dedication to knitting and a reflection of her beloved family name.
Co-founder Evan Anderson graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Business with a degree in accounting. His focus on small business management and start-up companies, paired with his creative spirit, make him a key part of Barrett Wool Co.’s development, operations, and marketing.
